Obituary for Robert C "Bob" McGinty

Robert C. (Bob) McGinty died at home on Dec. 30, 2018, just five days before his 94th birthday. A third generation Nevadan, Bob was born in Reno on Jan. 4, 1925, and spent his entire life in the Reno-Sparks area. After his father’s death in 1928, Bob lived with his grandparents, Fred and Zina Walts, until his mother remarried. After that he was raised by his mother, Hildeth, and stepfather, Ralph Waggoner.

During high school, Bob was bedridden for over a year with rheumatic fever. Upon his recovery, the attending doctor predicted that Bob might even live to be 60.

In 1945 Bob married Anna Munley, mother of his two children. After their divorce, Bob remarried, and he and his second wife, Rose, raised Rose’s son John and shared over 50 years together.
For most of his working life Bob was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad and retired as a locomotive engineer. Besides his railroad career, Bob was a volunteer for the Sparks Fire Department and spent many seasons off Bodega Bay fishing commercially for salmon with Rose on their boat, Mirage. Bob and Rose also frequently travelled to Mexico to boat and fish most of the length of the Gulf of California.

Bob was a hunter, fisherman, and trapper for his entire life. He had vivid memories of deer and elk hunts with his friend Dick Jolly and decades of hunting and running a trapline with his good friend Kendall Vaughn.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Rose and many relatives and friends. Among his survivors are his son, Robert McGinty (Celia), his daughter, Lynn McGinty Lawson (Mark), stepson, John DeSoto (Gayle), five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

The family thanks Kindred Hospice, especially Eddie, and Bob’s many caregivers from Comfort Keepers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to NDOW’s Operation Game Thief or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. at the O‘Brien-Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home, 600 W. Second St., Reno.
