John Alan Bryant (1937-2018)

John Alan Bryant, 80, passed away March 7, 2018 at his home in Sparks, Nevada. John was born May 9, 1937 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, son of Alan A. and Martha Wessels Bryant. John grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, where he attended Kingsley elementary, West Junior, and West High, graduating with the Class of 1955. He was on the school’s state championship golf team. On June 13, 1959, John was married to Shirley Ann Faye, at the First Congregational Church in Waterloo. She preceded him in death January 25, 2018.

John began his studies at Drake University, Des Moines, where he earned a BS degree in pharmacy in 1959, qualifying him as a registered pharmacist in the state of Iowa. Subsequent studies at the University of Iowa Medical College led to his 1963 graduation in the top ten per cent of his class and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha. A rotating internship (1963-1964) was completed in Stockton, California. While working on a residency at the University in obstetrics and gynecology (1964-1965), John was called to two-year active duty (USAF-MC at Beale AFB) during the Viet Nam conflict, serving in his medical specialization.

After receiving an honorable discharge, John turned to the study of ophthalmology. Having completed a three-year (1967-1970) residency at the University of Iowa, John, along with Shirley and their three sons, moved to Reno, Nevada. There, John achieved board certification in ophthalmology and served the Reno community in that capacity for many decades, at one time presiding over the Washoe County Medical Society.
